45 mins paint! The beautiful Sana.

Monday, January 2, 2012

Despite the fact that I'm not catholic, or even religious, here's Madonna w/ child. In Color! Unlike my usual black and white. Trying not to be too rusty in painting. It's nice to put on some music, and get some practice painting. ~1.5 hours until i got bored (i have a really short attention span). I'll eventually revisit it, but i felt like i should post since its the new year and all. HAPPY 2012! Hopefully there wont be an apocalypse and i can start bloggin again.

Reinterpreted from a picture on facebook(of all places...) from Jennifer Harris(a chick i went to elementary school with, and probably havent had a conversation with in over 10 years... no creepy). I saw a picture that was very maternal and reminded me of Madonna w/ child.

Today is my birthday. I am 24 years old!

Worked on it for 2 more hrs. It's been a productive/fun memorial day weekend. Got some good practice with squash and stretch, hold and poppage.

Turned the model black so you can see the silhouette.

Right click on vid > turn loop ON to make it loop.

A personal project. I really wanted to do an attack animation of some kind after seeing kung fu panda 2. The fight scenes had great flow and rhythm.

Just playing around in max for 2-4 hrs. Heres a playblast of an attack im doing for a mage/rogue type character. Its only my initial pass. I'll probably add 1 or 2 more attacks to the chain, and add more breakdowns whenever i revisit it. I just wanted to get some practice w/ body mechanics.. animate some spins and jumps....

It's been a solid 8-10 months since ive textured/painted, or done anything in 2D other than 3D character animation. drinkin some scotch, listening to good music, and some good old fashion drunken painting...  It was fun just to have some free time to paint.

1.5 hrs just painting w/ no initial concept. Just starting painting and somehow ended up painting naked chicks + monsters.

2d dump

I havent died, i still do pose maniacs! all are 30 second sketches, expect for one of the rows, which are 10 second sketches.

I did a 40 min painting of a pear from photo ref. My brain has a hard time translating green tones into values, so i decided to get some practice in. I'm fairly happy w/ how it turned out since i usually really, REALLY struggle w/ greens.

Concepting

So i decided to do some silhouettes for some upcoming characters to sculpt. They're pretty archetypal for the most part :/

My personal favorites are the flying monkey and satyr centaur. What can i say, i must have a thing for flail tails. i'll probably end up finalizing and doing orthos for the flying monkey. I think it has potential to be hilarious. Picture a small monkey with massive wings flying around, bludgeoning victims with its tail. When it lands, it'll rest on top of his flail, looking cute but deadly. They can be our generation's gremlins. Do not feed after midnight!

Bouncer

I was inspired by Bob Incredible and team fortress 2. Beside him is a high poly female head. Using the bouncer's chubby head as a base mesh, i re-sculpted it in mudbox, carefully preforming a face lift and double chin reduction. workflow: model a low poly head with good edge flow in Maya > subdiv and sculpt bouncer head in mudbox > feminize! Her texture's going to change, but as of right now shes a.... dolphin trainer or possibly a jamaican bobsledder. Copyright Benxing Entertainment.

I also feel bad that i havent done a self portrait in a while so i did a 15 min speed paint. very unfinished. I think i'll probably spend a day and just do rapid 15 min speed gestural portraits.

GA WIP

WIP. I'm working on the Pawn contest for GA. I'm about 1.5 hrs in. My inspiration was a zerg hydralisk then i threw in some human anatomy. The process of sculpting was surprisingly fluid and a lot faster than pushing/pulling vertexes in Maya.

30 min painting of an onion from reference.

uhhh

My old laptop couldnt handle zbrush w/ only 1 gig of ram and a horrible graphics card... anything beyond a measly 900k and my laptop would crash. This is my first 3d sculpt on my new behemoth desktop, and i was able to get up to 7.5 million quads and still sculpt like butter. I'm paranoid that my computer will implode if i add another subdiv.

I started dragging out zspheres and began sculpting with no initial concept. I was treating this as a learning exercise rather than attempting to make any sort of polished piece. No pressure, just relaxing on a friday night, listening to grooveshark(similar to pandora), and sculpting. messed around for 1 hr.

I sculpted in Mudbox this morning at work. After testing out both briefly, I think i slightly prefer mudbox over zbrush. Mudbox is more intuitive and user friendly while zbrush is crazy advanced with butt-tons of drop down menus and sliders. But i see almost everyone on Gameartisans using zbrush, so it can't be all bad, amirite? I'll just give into peer pressure and keep learning zbrush. I will, however, stick w/ mudbox when poly painting.

I also did another self portrait. It took slightly over an hr. Again, just an exercise to cool down before bed. Trying to get better at color and value.

archer update 2

I'm about midway through texturing. I should be finished by the end of this weekend. It'll probably be the last "old school" character model/texture I make in my spare time. After this, SCULPTING!

I got tired/bored of texturing so ironically started a self portrait. 1hr to cool down before bed.

Archer model

I just got back from Zynga's holiday party in California. Had a blast with Helen and Co. but now its time to get back to work! I have a week's vacation from work, so I figure its just enough time to finish 1 character model.

Here's a WIP screenshot. Ive barely finished the hands and havent really started on the feet. I forgot how draining it is to model hands. I'm tempted to use some zsphere sculpting in zbrush, then just retopo-ing/exporting. This will be my first female 3D model. I'm excited! eeeep.

Dino attack!

Copyright Benxing Entertainment.
This is by far my favorite low poly model ive ever created! I spent about an hr sketching some dinosaur silhouettes, and then started modeling once i found one w/proportions i liked. After i finished modeling, i rigged this bugger and played with his head scale to make him look cuter. It's like DK mode in golden eye! nom nom nom. It took about a day and a half, while going back and forth between creating UI elements and modeling/texturing/rigging him.

I havent completed his texture yet, but I'm really excited to start animating him. He's going to be innocent, hyperactive, ferocious, and sad that he has such tiny tiny arms.

Squirrel retextured

I retextured the squirrel and gave him a hobo stick to hold all his.... nuts and doodads. Copyright Benxing Entertainment
